Favored by the locals, Japanese Covered Bridge stands as one of the most famous city landmarks. The iconic bridge was built in the end of the 16th century to connect the Japanese and Chinese areas of the town. A legend has it that the bridge sits on the back of an ancient monstrous earthquake-causing dragon. A small, simple temple inside the bridge is dedicated to a weather god, who is believed to have the power to stop earthquakes. The wooden pagoda roof and the original ornamentation are well-preserved and the arched shape of the road was restored in 1986. Notice the pairs of guardian statues on each entrance, representing dogs and monkeys. There are two explanations for this--one is that these are the years in the Chinese calendar when the bridge was begun and finished and the other one is that these are the Zodiac signs of many Chinese emperors. Japanese Covered Bridge Reviews
Absolutly must see at Hoi An. Crowded place but it is natural if so many people want to see something unique. more »
Look at the above picture. You have now seen it. It is nothing any more special up close. It is incredibly crowded and sometimes (depends on the day), you get charged just to walk across it. Plus, it ... more »
The bridge itself is very nice and very well located right next to the canal with markets and restaurants. However, is always busy and you have to pay to access and cross it to the other side. I wonder what’s next? Pay to breath air? If you want to access the bridge without paying just use the surrounding streets to go around to the other end of the bridge. Surprise, It’s free access (I know right?!) I did that today. It takes about 5 minutes to go around. Inside the bridge it’s pretty cool, nice views and there’s a little room telling bridge history.
Scenic spot with a mix of cultures. Really pretty during the day and in the evening it's beautiful with the lights and lanterns in the water. Very touristy area but lots of great options for food and drinks.
